Larry Hoover, also known as “King Larry,” was born on the 30th of November 1950 in Jackson, Mississippi. When Hoover was four years old, the family moved to the north of Chicago, Illinois. At 13, he was out and about as part of a group known as”The Supreme Gangsters, engaging in small-scale crimes like theft and mugging. The criminal activities he was involved in soon morphed into firings and assaults.

Hoover became a leader position in the era of his role as the Supreme Gangsters grew, and Hoover later joined forces with the kingpin of the rival gang, David Barksdale, to form the Black Gangster Disciple Nation. In 1969, following Barksdale was injured by a gunshot, Hoover assumed leadership over his Gangster Disciples. The gang took control of the South Side drug trade, earning more than $1,000 per day in revenue.

In his 20s, Hoover was out of prison numerous times and had been through at least six attempts to kill him. But he could not escape the clutches of law enforcement when Hoover and another Gangster disciple, Andrew Howard, were accused of murdering the dealer William Young on the 26th of February in 1973. Two men received sentences of 150-200 years in prison. Hoover transferred to the maximum-security Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill, Illinois.

Hoover’s power was only able to increase within Stateville. Hoover began to protect other prisoners, and, in turn, they became followers and recruits to Hoover’s Gangster Disciples. Hoover’s influence over other inmates was acknowledged by the warden’s office, who began to look at Hoover as an influencer to stop violent riots and protests in the confinement system.

Growth and Development

Hoover, influenced by the story that Mayor Richard J. Daley wrote, began to dissuade violence within his followers. Instead, Hoover made education compulsory for Gangster Disciples and directed his army to “go to school, study trades and build … abilities and capabilities to grow stronger in society.”

Modifying to change the G.D. of “Gangster Disciple” to “Growth and Development,” Hoover’s reforms began getting positive recognition from outside. Growth and Development created non-profit organizations with registered voters, a music label that provided help to needy children, a series of demonstrations against the abolition of public services, and even an apparel line.

Doubtful prison officials believed that Hoover’s intentions were good as a scheme to get out of jail and return to his illicit activities. While Hoover’s friends and allies from the outside sought to have Hoover released for his contribution to the community, law enforcement officers insisted that Hoover was looking for new ways to increase his criminal activities.

Hoover’s Gangster Disciples had grown to over 15,000 members across Georgia in at least five states. Their drug earnings had risen to the thousands of dollars, which the gang’s members blamed on Hoover’s leadership. Hoover.

In a different facility within Vienna, Illinois, Hoover lived a lavish lifestyle that included brand extravagant jewelry, new clothes, special meals, and private visits from friends and relatives.
